STATIC SLING

The Static Sling is a minimally invasive surgical technique designed specifically for people with complete or partial facial paralysis. It’s particularly beneficial for individuals with significant facial asymmetry from permanent facial nerve damage. Most people with a complete facial nerve paralysis are helped by the Sling but since it is a minimal and reversible operation, people with partial or still improving nerve function often benefit as well. The Sling helps restore both symmetry at rest and lessen the functional problems on the affected side of the face, such as loss of the normal smile line, shift of the lip toward the intact side, redundant cheek tissue and poor nasal breathing. Most facial nerve cases are due to a Bell’s Palsy and Acoustic Neuroma.

PURPOSE:

The primary goal of the Static Sling procedure is restoring a degree of symmetry to the face by creating a smile fold, that is the nasolabial fold between the nose and mouth, and improve many of the functional issues paralysis causes like poor nasal airway and excess eyelid opening. The procedure does this by creating a permanent adjustable sling suspension of the face anchored in the temple.

PROCEDURE:

During the procedure, the surgeon places a supportive sling under the skin and muscles of the face using a unique specially designed instrument that allows passage of the sling from a small incision in the temple into the face with minimal surgical trauma and no facial incisions. This sling provides structural support, effectively lifting the paralyzed features and restoring a more balanced and functional appearance. The technique is so minimal that it can be performed safely without damage to partial nerve function or existing muscle reanimation surgery.

Some physicians and facial paralysis clinics recommend complicated cross facial nerve grafts, free muscle flaps or nerve transfer surgeries to replace non-functioning muscles with functional ones. Although these procedures are elegant and offer the possibility of restoration of movement in the paralyzed face, in the adult population the reality is that such lengthy and complex procedures offer limited success rates, involve multiple incisions, donor site problems and require lengthy healing periods. In contrast, Dr. Aronowitz’s Static Sling surgery offers a unique and updated version of a traditional approach. It is akin to using puppet strings to create a static state, effectively restoring a measure of facial symmetry at rest and a significant reduction in the distortion of facial features with speaking and expression. In the longer term, the sling provides a constant force to oppose the exaggerated pull of the intact opposite side facial muscle which tend to pull the midline features toward the unparalyzed side. Thus, the sling restores a semblance of normalcy without the drawbacks of traditional muscle transfer procedures.

SUITABILITY:

The Static Sling technique is often used when traditional facial nerve repair or reanimation procedures are not suitable or effective. It offers a viable alternative for individuals who may not be candidates for other surgical interventions. It is also a primary option for other patients.

BENEFITS:

By lifting the paralyzed features, the Static Sling procedure can significantly improve facial aesthetics and functionality. This improvement can lead to better control over facial expressions, enhanced facial symmetry, and an overall boost in self-confidence. The procedure is also an out-patient procedure with a quick recovery time.

RECOVERY:

Patients undergoing the Static Sling procedure can expect a very brief recovery period of 2 to 3 days during which they may experience minimal swelling and discomfort. However, as the tissues heal and adjust to the sling, individuals typically notice gradual improvements in facial symmetry and movement. Out of town patients usually are cleared to return home as soon as post op day 2. Showring and normal activities may be resumed in less than a week.

POST-OPERATIVE CARE:

It’s crucial for patients to follow post-operative care instructions provided by their surgeon. This includes attending follow-up appointments to monitor progress, ensure optimal healing, and address any concerns that may arise.

Overall, the Static Sling procedure offers a valuable solution for individuals dealing with facial paralysis, providing them with the opportunity to regain control over their facial expressions and improve their quality of life.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

The Static Sling procedure is a surgical technique designed to address facial paralysis. It involves the use of a supportive sling placed under the skin and muscles of the face to lift drooping facial features caused by paralysis.
Candidates for the Static Sling procedure are typically individuals experiencing facial paralysis due to nerve damage or weakness resulting from Bell’s Palsy or Acoustic Neuromas. This procedure is particularly beneficial for those who may not be suitable candidates for traditional facial nerve repair or reanimation procedures.
The Static Sling procedure can improve various facial features affected by paralysis, especially the nasolabial fold, that is the smile line between the base of the nose and corner of the mouth. The procedure also improves the sagging of the lower eyelid and the cheek. It aims to restore symmetry and functionality to the affected side of the face.
There are few complications with this minimally invasive procedure, in our series less than 1%. But with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications, such as infection, bleeding, or discomfort. It’s essential to discuss these risks with your surgeon and follow post-operative care instructions diligently.
The results of the Static Sling procedure typically last for many years but vary depending on individual factors and the extent of paralysis. In most cases, the improvements in facial symmetry and function are long-lasting, providing sustained benefits to patients. The procedure is fairly easy to revise if needed and it is fully reversible.
Coverage for the Static Sling procedure may vary depending on insurance policies and individual circumstances. It’s recommended to check with your insurance provider to determine coverage eligibility and any associated costs.
